This simulation depicts China and its surrounding territories in mid-194 AD, an alternate history where events following the starting point can change entirely. China remains under the name and legitimacy of the Han Dynasty, but real control is fragmented among the imperial court, warlords, local governors, independent forces, and various border power groups. The center of the game lies in Northern and Central China, where warlord powers constantly clash, particularly in Yanzhou, Jizhou, Yuzhou, Qingzhou, Xuzhou, and Bingzhou. The capital region of Luoyang remains significant as a source of imperial legitimacy, even though political and military power is no longer centralized under the court. In the east and southeast, the Xuzhou and Yangzhou regions connect to the power networks of several warlords. River routes, trading cities, and agricultural lands are vital for sustaining armies and maintaining authority. At this time, Sun Ce holds a small power base under Yuan Shu, while the surrounding areas remain open for expansion, alliances, or new forms of conflict. Jingzhou is a strategic region between the north, the center, and the south. As a nexus between major river basins and the route into Sichuan, controlling the cities and passes in this region significantly impacts trade, troop movements, and the balance of power among many factions. Liu Biao remains a key power in the region, while local warlords and clans continue to cultivate their own power bases. To the west, Sichuan and Hanzhong possess terrain distinct from the central plains, allowing them to serve as defensive bastions or stable power bases. Liu Yan and local authorities in Sichuan maintain their own networks, while Hanzhong remains under the influence of Zhang Lu, holding importance as a link between the central plains and the western territories. In the northwest, Gansu, Liangzhou, and the borderlands are regions of vital military and commercial importance. Western routes connect the Chinese world to external lands, and regional power involves a complex interplay between border warlords, tribes, and long-distance trade networks. Ma Teng, Han Sui, and other power players compete or cooperate to control these strategic routes and cities. To the north and northeast, the Youzhou and Liaodong borders are where the influence of prominent clans and border garrisons remains high. Gongsun Zan and Gongsun Du are among the key power brokers in the region, while the frontiers adjacent to non-Chinese lands serve as a backdrop that can impact northern politics, trade, and stability. The southern lands and regions beyond China are included on the map to provide geographical context and connections to the outside world. These areas are not set as primary factions for the initial scenario, but they can serve as sources for trade, diplomatic contact, migration, border threats, or events that influence China as the game progresses. This world begins just after the conflict in Yanzhou erupts. Lu Bu has seized Puyang and established his own power base. Liu Bei has been granted a small territory to govern by Tao Qian, while Sun Ce maintains a small force under Yuan Shu. Tao Qian is still alive, and Dong Zhuo remains a powerful figure influencing the political balance of this era. The Han imperial court remains the ultimate source of legitimacy. Emperor Xian serves as the symbolic center of the dynasty, but imperial decrees do not necessarily command obedience in all regions. Real power depends on military strength, urban administration, provisions, noble networks, personal connections, and the ability to maintain the loyalty of subordinates. This world focuses on characters and interpersonal relationships. Warlords, generals, officials, advisors, family members, allies, rivals, and enemies can shift the balance of power. Political ties may range from lord-vassal relations to alliances, rivalries, kinship, sworn brotherhoods, mentorships, or secret pacts, all subject to change through marriage, appointments, war, mutual benefit, betrayal, and various events. Each state requires more than just an army; it must rely on cities, farmland, treasuries, trade routes, administration, and personnel to maintain control. Official titles and government offices can be used as tools to organize the state and build political influence, but appointments are based on the player's decisions and world events rather than being pre-determined. Maps outside the primary political zones serve as boundaries and a backdrop for the world. Not every territory needs to have established rule or ongoing war from the start. The significance of each land can grow as characters expand their influence, open trade routes, send envoys, mobilize armies, or forge relationships with the local inhabitants and factions. This is a Three Kingdoms world beginning in 194 AD, where no historical path is forced to occur ever again. Cao Cao, Yuan Shao, Gongsun Zan, Tao Qian, Yuan Shu, Liu Biao, Liu Yan, Zhang Lu, Ma Teng, Han Sui, Gongsun Du, Liu Bei, Lu Bu, Sun Ce, and other powerful figures all have the chance to shape their own futures. The outcomes of wars, politics, relationships, and character decisions will determine whether the Han lands are unified, fractured into multiple powers, or steered toward a completely new history that never truly happened.
In mid-194 AD, the Han Empire descends into an era of fracture. Following the turmoil in Yan Province, Lü Bu has seized Puyang to establish his own base of power. Meanwhile, Cao Cao, Yuan Shao, Gongsun Zan, Tao Qian, Yuan Shu, Liu Biao, Liu Yan, Zhang Lu, Ma Teng, Han Sui, Gongsun Du, and numerous other warlords hold sway over their respective regions. Liu Bei has been granted a small territory to govern by Tao Qian, and Sun Ce maintains a modest force under the banner of Yuan Shu. With Tao Qian and Dong Zhuo still alive, the Han court remains a source of legitimacy that all must weigh, though it can no longer truly command the warlords across the land. From the start, every war, alliance, appointment, betrayal, expansion, and shift in the court can unfold freely. No character or state is bound to their historical destiny. This world is not a simulation of the past, but a sandbox for players to forge their own history in a version of the Three Kingdoms that never was.
